Original creature design for dnd: HAURJALEA Gargantuan Aberration Alignment: Always Neutral Evil Challenge rating: 18 "A chimerical vision stands before you: this hybrid creature, its body covered in scales, protrusions and spines, stands on four spindly four-toed limbs, like large bird feet. Its hideous horned head resembles a bizarre mixture of wolf and deer, and its face is covered with crazed eyes. A long reptilian tail, tipped with a barbed sting, completes this abominable picture." The Haurjalea (pronounced "or-hi-lee") is a nightmarish creature of Herculean power; an evolved and thankfully very rare version of the Julajimus. A Julajimus is a cruel abomination masquerading as an adorable little animal, only to be taken in by a child. When settled in its new home, the monster enjoys tormenting its inhabitants for a while, before regaining its original form and devouring the entire family. Once a Julajimus has fed on a large number of children, it isolates itself in a remote location and hides in a cocoon. After a long incubation period, a starving Haurjalea finally emerges from this chrysalis and sets out in search of new prey. One of the most evil beings, the Haurjalea loves nothing more than a good massacre of innocents. Sadistic to the extreme, it haunts forests and mountains and attacks isolated villages, where it hides and creates a climate of terror. Here, it takes great pleasure in mentally and physically torturing each inhabitant before killing them one by one, down to the last one. Unlike many powerful monsters, the Haurjalea likes to remain discreet. It is capable of decimating an entire region, village after village, before its misdeeds attract the attention of adventurers capable of stopping it. Most creatures inhabiting a wilderness occupied by a Haurjalea—including the Julajimus—abandon the area, generally causing additional damage in the surroundings (panicked herds crossing into urban zones, attacks by monsters dislodged from their territory, etc.). This is often the only clear clue that allows one to guess its presence. A Haurjalea is capable of changing its size and appearance at will. In its natural form—its maximum size—it measures nearly 20 ft. tall and over 30ft. long. Despite its proportions, it is particularly light and agile. It generally moves on all fours, but can rear up to manipulate objects or deliver claw attacks with its forelegs. Its stinger delivers a particularly vile poison: a single sting is followed by several hours of excruciating pain before the victim succumbs. Although its tail is powerful enough to burst through a body, the Haurjalea's cruelty often drives it to inoculate its poison rather than kill its prey outright. The Haurjalea speaks Common, but its telepathic powers allow it to communicate with most creatures. |
